2012 Buninyong Marvellous Marmalade Fair

At the Buninyong Marvellous Marmalade Fair held on 5th February 2012, a large crowd of interested entrants and supporters filled the Buninyong Town Hall for the official opening of this inaugural event by Ballarat Mayor, Cr Mark Harris. The 95 marmalade jars entered from around Australia, with every State and the ACT represented, were judged by the two CWA Judges who had travelled for some 2 and a half hours that morning.

Sue Gass and Barbara Porter did a sterling job in assessing and scoring each entry on the basis of:

  • Presentation (max 2)
  • Colour (5)
  • Consistency, Texture and Quality (6)
  • Flavour and Aroma (7)
  • Total of 20 points

Individual entrants were awarded prizes for the different citrus classes as well as the man-made class. Prize-winners came from across Australia, including Julie Lawrence from WA and Ailsa Rowley in Queensland as well as around Victoria with Genevieve Schwarze, Ann Marston, Sandra Plunkett and Best in Show winner, Anne-Marie Primmer, taking out First Prize in various classes.

Closer to Buninyong, First Prize winners included Lyn Fleming and Sheila Etchells, while June Henderson did extraordinarily well in taking out all three prizes in the grapefruit class and winning another. Neville Wilson, a first-time marmalade-maker, won the man-made class from a strong field from around Australia.

Selection of the Australian and Buninyong XIs - Prue Bentley, Chief Selector

Following the judging, the Australian XI was then very carefully selected in conjunction with Sue and Barbara by Chief Selector, Prue Bentley who is ABC Presenter in Ballarat. Prue's task was to select a balanced team as, after all, Australia would never send a cricket team of all bowlers or all batsmen - so the choice was amongst the Sevilles, the limes, the grapefruit, the orange and lemon or the three-fruit, for example. And the team selected even featured a tangelo marmalade!

England, having been stung by their loss in 2011, was obviously worried about our team this year as they appointed Hugh Fearnely-Whittingstall, the well-known foodie and presenter of the River Cottage TV series, as their Coach/Selector and he even submitted a jar of his own. But all to no avail as he was soundly beaten by Prue's crew! Buninyong marmaladiers were not represented in the Australian XI in fairness to those further afield as they also had access to the Buninyong Village XI which is up against an English Village XI and still awaiting judging in Cumbria.

A Call to our Marmy Army of marmalade-makers around Australia - get ready for the 2013 event!

Next year's Buninyong Marvellous Marmalade Fair will be held on Sunday 3rd February so everyone is encouraged to make marmalade through the year and save their 2-Jar entries to send to Buninyong in January. Entry details are at Rules & Entry Form
